Ophelia

Ophelia is the goddess of sorrow, time, and rivers. She is best understood as a protector, shielding us from our fears and worries. I repurposed rebar (a steel reinforcing rod used in concrete), curving several pieces to represent flowing water. An antique door hinge shields her heart. I see her as standing tall, with strength and power.

The names of my sculptures come to me upon completion, I feel that they whisper their names to me. Each one is totally different. I do not draw them out ahead of time, they develop during the creation. A single piece of metal from my collection starts the process. I hunt through the piles of steel to find a piece that sparks my interest. The bodice takes shape first and that dictates the rest of the form. Their personality is fully developed upon completion, and that is when they divulge their name.
